So much to be

If you finish a day early, protect that day. Don’t fill it with tasks. Don’t fill it with the washing, or the newsletters, or the endless little list. Let it be what it is: free. Just be.

You are sitting at your laptop, gazing at some work to finish. Probably 6-8 hours total, and the deadline is the end of the week. It’s Monday afternoon.

It seems doable.

And you have a quiet little list of things to do around the house, too. Load the washing. Clean the guest room. Buy new clothes. Reorganize your files. Read (or delete) the newsletters waiting in your inbox... nothing urgent.

In theory, you could finish the work first, and then do everything else, or maybe even rest a bit. Everyt time management guru would suggest this. And you know this would be the right way.

But something in you makes you do the not-so-urgent things first, and then squeezes the work in at the last minute, finishing late in the night, just-in-time. Like so many times before, this happens again…

You are tired of it. You want to do it better. You know you should. You know you can.

You just cannot.

Because having so much left to do feels familiar, maybe even comfortable...

And if you finished a day or two early? You have no words for that freedom at all...

Having so much to do feels familiar.

Having so much to be sounds alien.

You’re not procrastinating because you don’t know how to finish the work, or because you’re disorganized.

You’re using the washing, the guest room, the unread newsletters to keep the having so much left to do being true. This keeps you in a familiar place. You feel safe. Justified. Worth something.

The chores that you do before you finish work aren’t a distraction from your work. They’re insurance against finishing everything. Because finishing would drop you straight into being...

And you’ve never been allowed to live there. Decades of fluency in doing. Almost no vocabulary for being…

And if you really did the work first and finished a day early, you wouldn’t actually rest into that free day. You’d find the washing. Or the newsletters. Or something else after them, not even on your list today. The doing would refill the space like water finding its level.

The point is what you do with the space, if it opens.

You would like to go for a walk but you don’t. You have been planning to exercise for ages, but you don’t. You would like to read a bit in your favorite corner of the garden, but the book stays unread.

The being never quite happen. They stay on a someday list. Work, the chores, the fill-in things to do will always come first.

Efficiency isn’t your problem. Tolerating emptiness is.

I’m not going to give you a “productivity hack”. I want to offer you something else. A small experiment. Deliberately uncomfortable.

Do the work first. Be disciplined about it, the way you always have been.

But the discipline you’ll actually need comes after. When the space opens. When you are done and free. And instantly, everything in you reaches to fill it. Household chores. One more blog post to write. Clean up your files. Reorganize your inbox. Everything. Anything. You fill the space with doing, instantly, without even noticing it.

Finishing early creates that empty space you’ve spent your life avoiding.

Try it this week with me: if you finish work early, protect that time. Don’t fill it with tasks. Don’t fill it with the washing, or the newsletters, or the endless little list. Let it be what it is: free. You don’t need to explain, you don’t need to justify.

Just be.

The washing will still be there on Monday. The guest room, the newsletters, the whole quiet list… they are the least urgent things you own. Let them stay as they are, instead of using them against a free afternoon.

If a whole free day is too big, aim for an afternoon. Or a free hour. One hour you refuse to fill. One hour of so much to be.

Let the empty come, without rushing to fill it.
